About Sardinia

Sardinia is an Italian summer at its most glamorous: turquoise water, powder-white beaches, private yacht days, and the Costa Smeralda beach clubs at their peak.

About Sardinia

Sardinia is a world of its own, an island the size of a small country set in some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean, with a coastline that runs from the glamour of the Costa Smeralda to wild coves reached only by boat. Inland lies something rarer still: a mountainous interior of granite peaks, Bronze Age towers, and shepherd villages that have kept their own language and traditions for millennia. It is Italy's most exclusive summer address and, at the same time, one of its most untamed.

How to Get to Sardinia

Sardinia has 3 airports, each serving a different part of a large island, so the right one depends on where you are staying.

Olbia Costa Smeralda (OLB) is the gateway to the northeast and the luxury coast, approximately 5km / 3 miles from Olbia and roughly 45 minutes from Porto Cervo. It is the most convenient airport for the Costa Smeralda, Gallura, and the La Maddalena archipelago, and the only airport on the island with a direct seasonal flight from North America.

Cagliari Elmas (CAG) serves the capital and the south, approximately 8km / 5 miles from Cagliari, with Chia and Villasimius each around 1 hour away by car.

Alghero Fertilia (AHO) is the gateway to the northwest, approximately 10km / 6 miles from Alghero, with the beaches of Stintino roughly 45 minutes away.

All 3 have direct flights from mainland Italian and European hubs, and car ferries run from the mainland to Olbia, Porto Torres, and Cagliari. Distances across the island are long, so most guests fly into the airport closest to their villa. A car is essential everywhere outside the main towns.

Where to go in Sardinia

The Costa Smeralda and Gallura
The northeast is Sardinia's most famous face: a coast of pink granite, umbrella pines, and coves of clear turquoise water, developed from the 1960s into one of the Mediterranean's most exclusive resorts. Porto Cervo is its center, with a yacht harbor, designer boutiques, and beach clubs, while Porto Rotondo, Baja Sardinia, and the quieter inland village of San Pantaleo complete the picture. Offshore, the La Maddalena archipelago is a national park of uninhabited islands and pale sandbars best explored by boat, and the Gallura interior of cork oaks and granite is worth a day in its own right.

Alghero and the northwest
On the opposite corner of the island, Alghero keeps the language, street names, and cooking of the Catalans who settled it in the 14th century, wrapped inside sandstone walls the color of honey. The Riviera del Corallo runs north to the white sand and shallow water of La Pelosa at Stintino, one of Italy's most celebrated beaches, and out to the wild island of Asinara, a former prison now a national park. South of Alghero, the colorful riverfront town of Bosa and the cliffs of Capo Caccia round out a coast that sees far fewer international visitors than the northeast.

The Gulf of Orosei and the east
The east coast holds Sardinia's most dramatic scenery: the Gulf of Orosei, a long arc of limestone cliffs falling into turquoise water, where the finest coves, Cala Luna, Cala Mariolu, and Cala Goloritzé, are reached only by boat or on foot. Cala Gonone and Dorgali are the main bases, and behind them the Supramonte rises into a wilderness of gorges and caves. To the south, the region of Ogliastra keeps some of the island's quietest beaches and oldest traditions.

Cagliari and the south
Cagliari, the island's capital, rises in tiers of pale limestone toward the Castello quarter, with Roman and Pisan remains, a lively market and food scene, and the long city beach of Poetto. East along the coast lie Villasimius and the beaches of the Costa Rei; west are Pula and the Phoenician and Roman ruins of Nora, and the resort coast of Chia, with beaches backed by dunes and shallow lagoons where flamingos gather. The south stays warm longer than the north and is generally better value.

When to go to Sardinia

The best month to visit Sardinia depends on what you are looking for, but July and August are the strongest for warm seas, long beach days, and the island at the height of its summer, with June and early September the prime bookends of the villa season.

Sardinia is above all a summer destination, and the villa season runs from June to mid-September, with only a handful of properties open in late May or into early October. July and August are the peak: the hottest and sunniest months, with the warmest water, the longest days, and the beaches, beach clubs, and coastal towns all fully open. This is when the Costa Smeralda fills with yachts, the sea is ideal for swimming and boating, and the island's summer life is at its most vivid. June opens the season with hot sun and a sea that is already warm, the beaches and beach clubs coming into their own; early September carries the same heat and warm water as the crowds begin to ease. Spring is green and beautiful inland, with May wildflowers across the hills, though the sea is still cool and most coastal resorts have yet to open, and by mid-autumn the coast turns quiet as resorts close.

Why Visit Sardinia

Few places in the Mediterranean combine water this clear with a character this strong. Sardinia offers some of the finest beaches in Europe, from the yacht harbors of the Costa Smeralda to empty coves reached only by boat, and behind them a mountainous interior with a language, cuisine, and archaeology found nowhere else. It is unmistakably a premium destination: the Costa Smeralda ranks among the most expensive corners of the Mediterranean, and even elsewhere Sardinia rarely comes cheap, though the south offers far more space and value than the famous northeast.

The food is distinct from anywhere on the mainland. The coast delivers spectacular seafood, sea urchins, bottarga, and the catch of the day, while the interior turns to porceddu (suckling pig roasted over myrtle), culurgiones (pasta parcels of potato and mint), pecorino, and the thin, crisp pane carasau. The wines are serious and particular: the mineral Vermentino di Gallura, the deep Cannonau that fuels the island's famous longevity, and mirto, the digestivo distilled from myrtle berries.

What Essenza Escapes opens up in Sardinia is an island that is famously hard to access at its best. Private boat and yacht days through the La Maddalena archipelago and the coves of the Gulf of Orosei, skippered charters to beaches reachable only from the water, and tenders arranged straight from the villa or the nearest marina. Tables at the beach clubs and waterfront restaurants that are impossible to book in August, sunset drinks along the Costa Smeralda, and access to the private clubs and berths that define a Sardinian summer. Beach setups on the day's calmest stretch of coast, tastings of island Vermentino brought to the villa or the boat, and a network of captains, hosts, and beach concierges who know which cove will be sheltered and which club is worth the evening. These are the people in the Essenza Escapes network who turn a week on the water into something rarer than a beach vacation.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time of year to visit Sardinia for a villa holiday?

July and August are the peak of the Sardinian summer and the best time for warm seas, long beach days, and the island at its liveliest, when the Costa Smeralda fills with yachts and the beach clubs and waterfront tables are all in full swing. June opens the villa season with hot sun and a sea that is already warm, and early September carries the same heat and swimming with a slightly easier pace. The villa season runs from June to mid-September, with only a few properties open before or after, so almost every Sardinia stay falls within these months. Essenza Escapes can match the timing to exactly what you want from the trip, from the height of the season to its quieter edges.

Which airports serve Sardinia, and how far are they from the villas?

Sardinia has 3 airports, and the right one depends on your area, since crossing the island by car can take 3 hours or more. Olbia (OLB) is the gateway to the northeast and the Costa Smeralda, roughly 45 minutes from Porto Cervo, and the only Sardinian airport with a direct seasonal flight from North America. Cagliari (CAG) serves the capital and the south, with Chia and Villasimius about 1 hour away, while Alghero (AHO) is best for the northwest, around 45 minutes from Stintino. Essenza Escapes can arrange private transfers from any of these airports.

Do I need a car to explore Sardinia?

Yes, a car is essential for almost all Sardinia villa stays. Outside Cagliari and the main towns, public transport is limited, and the best beaches, coves, and interior villages are spread across a large island with long distances between them. Many guests pair the car with a private boat for the coastline and a driver for longer days, and towns like Cagliari and Alghero are best explored on foot once you arrive. Essenza Escapes can arrange car hire or a private driver from any Italian airport.

Where in Sardinia should I base myself?

Because the island is large and distances are long, most guests choose a single area rather than trying to cover several. The northeast, around the Costa Smeralda and Gallura, is the most glamorous and the most expensive, with the clearest coves and the La Maddalena archipelago offshore; the south, around Chia and Villasimius, has beaches to match at better value and a longer warm season. Essenza Escapes will help you pick the right coast for your priorities before recommending specific properties.

Can Essenza Escapes arrange a private boat day, and where should we go?

Yes, and on Sardinia it is one of the experiences guests remember most, since the finest coves are reachable only from the water. From the northeast, a private charter through the La Maddalena archipelago threads between uninhabited islands and pale sandbars; from the east coast, the boat runs along the Gulf of Orosei to Cala Mariolu, Cala Luna, and Cala Goloritzé, which have no road access at all. Essenza Escapes can arrange anything from a skippered day boat to a crewed yacht, with swimming stops, lunch aboard, and the timing set to reach each cove before the crowds. It is the single best way to see the coastline at its finest.

Is there more to Sardinia than beaches and the Costa Smeralda?

Yes, and the best of it makes an easy day trip inland from a coastal villa. An hour or so from the water, the Barbagia opens onto stone villages, mountain scenery, and the Bronze Age nuraghi that stand in their thousands, including the UNESCO site of Su Nuraxi di Barumini. Essenza Escapes can set up a guided day out with the archaeologists who study the sites, a long lunch with a shepherd family, and a tasting of island wine on the way back, all timed so you are on the coast again by evening. For guests who want a change of pace between beach days, it turns one day of the week into something quite different without giving up the sea.
